 Day 1
We're off!

ROUTE: Portland to Auburn ME DISTANCE: 34 Miles WINDS: Light tailwinds
WEATHER: Spectacular...75 degrees and sunny TERRAIN: Rolling TOTAL CLIMBING: Less than 1500

DAILY DOINGS: Well, we got off to a rousing start.  Luggage load at 9:00 then off into the wild blue yonder in the Maine backwoods.  We had just a beautiful day to ride today as I can't remember ever having as warm a day on this ride.  The sun was hot and the skies were clear in a million...just perfect for just about any ride you could imagine.  By late morning, we were all down to our jerseys and shorts without any jacket or even arm warmers...temps in the 70s

Most of the riders have never been to New England and if you haven't been in this area, I highly recommend it.  The houses, barns, farms, and general terrain are much different from the deep south where I'm from and different from about every where else I've been too.  The color here this time of year is beautiful even though it isn't peak time yet...we still see a lot of green out there, but there's enough color to make it interesting.  Aside from the color, we enjoyed many miles of stone fences that were built in the 1800s (some in the late 1700s) and homesteads that are beautifully manicured in a way that is stereotypically New England.  Everywhere we rode we came upon colorful displays of yard art or decorations for Halloween.

All in all it was a pretty good day.  We stayed dry, the temperatures were perfect, the scenery was beautiful, and everyone got in safely...makes for a happy tour leader.  Everyone seemed to get along pretty well even though it was a little hilly in spots.  We only had a couple navigational challenges but it's a pretty short mileage overall so it's no big deal...get lost and we'll find you somehow.  Hey, if they get off route it's an adventure!  Plus, they can come back and ride again and see the real route for the first time...now that's the ticket.  Karen and I split the time in the van and spent the morning stopping to take photos of the scenery.  Barb spent the day driving through folks and setting up SAG at about 15 miles out...quite a challenge to fix snacks for 10!  But I must admit it's as hard to keep up with 10 as it is 50...now that may seem silly, but when you have 50 we don't miss them right away when they get off track.  Most find their way back before we know they are gone, but with 10...make a wrong turn and we know it.  We may not know where they'll end up, but we know when they are gone.  When I asked everyone at rap how many didn't get lost today, no one held up their hand.  So even with the short day, bonus miles were abundant.

Tomorrow we have another shortish day of only 38 miles so we'll start again about 9:00.  Looking forward to another great day of leaf peeping.  Check in tomorrow and see what we're up to.

DID I SAY THAT?:  "Mike, we didn't have time to shower after we got in...dinner at 5:00 is just too early."  Now, wait a minute...we started at 9:00 and we only had 35 miles today...8 hours isn't enough time to ride and get in early enough to take a shower before dinner?  "But I'm on vacation."  What, you don't shower on vacation?  We'll have the restaurant put out a separate table for you.

"I don't see any hills on tomorrow's route."
"Did you look at the ride profile?"
"No...oh!"

DAILY LAF:  Team Iowa (Cheryl, Dwaine, Judy, and Randy) asked what time the bar opened as soon as they got into the motel.  The desk clerk said it didn't open until 5:00...it was 4:00.  Disappointed, they went to their room (probably to take a shower).  Soon after they arrived at their room, the phone rang..."Hello, I'm the bartender...I'm in the bar...come on down!"  Now that's what I call customer service.  Eureka!  Off to the bar they went, still in their cycling clothes (showers have to wait).  With their drinks in hand, they excused themselves to the motel pool.  I think one or two of them even jumped into the pool (now it's October in Maine!).  Does that count as a shower?  I hate it when something like rap gets into the way of vacation...but we all survive!

DAILY DIGITAL DELIGHTS

We see all kinds of friendly faces out here.

But we see lots of scary things too...Look out Karen!
