DAILY REPORT:

Great morning...everyone got to an early breakfast at 5:45 to beat the heat.  We loaded the luggage before breakfast this morning to get them on the road soon after breakfast, but it was for naught as service was slow with everyone ascending on the restaurant at the same time.  The last riders didn't get on the road until close to 7:30.

After our minor setback, everyone rolled out of town into the beautiful Wyoming countryside.  The route was a lonely road out into the rolling grasslands and the terrain was much prettier than yesterday's high desert.  Even with all the grassland, it is still really dry out here.  The fire hazard signs say "Extreme Danger" for grass fires.  One good bolt of lightening or a stray cigarette could ruin thousands of acres of grassland.

Yesterday took more out of people than they thought, but the cool departure temperatures put some life in their legs as they were riding a pretty brisk pace by the first SAG.  I spent most of the morning bouncing around taking photos of the vast open spaces while trying to get good composition with a rider somewhere in the frame.  This area really lends itself to some awesome snapshots.  I'd like to just have that job...take photos and just see how many great ones I could take in one day.

We kissed Wyoming good bye today at about the 55 miles point as we entered our 4th state...South Dakota.  The only thing that we noticed was the road got narrower in places and we picked up a few more hills.  At right,  a couple riders pose while I take the obligatory pictures of the entry sign (I heard that John's wife wasn't sure if he was on the ride so I made sure he was in the photo).  In years past, the sign was filled with bullet holes...they must have put up a new one or had someone put liquid putty in the holes so we wouldn't get the wrong impression upon entering their fair state.  Or was it the impression they wanted us to have in the past...Hope they don't shoot at cyclists.

Everything was going pretty well until after the second SAG stop.  I had hustled up to take an intermediate water stop to the top of the 4 mile climb right after the SAG.  I dropped Karen off at the top with a water jug so I could stay mobile.  As I was leaving, I was notified that there was a range fire in the Hot Springs area and smoke and ash may affect our route.  That's all we need...70 cyclists scattered all over SD and no where to go.  We called the motel and they said the fire was south of town and the winds were blowing from the NE...whew...maybe we could make it.  The motel assured us we were not affected by the fire...that was a bit optimistic.  I drove over the hill to check things out and I could see the smoke behind the mountain range that was between us and the motel...every thing seemed OK...ride on but watch out.  By the time the middle riders got over the 4 mile climb, smoke had blown into the valley we were riding through.  It was pretty intense so I hustled up through everyone to see if anyone needed a lift.  The smoke was a bit spotty but in places it was pretty thick.  Most everyone rode through the couple miles of smoke and by the time the final riders got there the winds had blown the smoke up the slopes and over to where our second SAG had been.  All in all, we were pretty lucky today with the fires...some of the locals weren't so lucky.  We needed a prescription for a sinus infection and the local pharmacist opened the pharmacy to fill it...on a Sunday...and his house along with about 20 others had burnt down in the fire but he still serviced his customers...our prayers are with him and his neighbors.

We were lucky with the weather too...the temps are pretty mild for this time of year.  It was 106 here yesterday...only about 85 today.  With the mild temps we get easterlies for winds...we'll take the mild and deal with the winds.  Tomorrow we ride to Mt Rushmore...maybe our second toughest day so far.  There will be lots of climbing and it's going to be hopefully mild again.  The riders are looking forward to seeing the monument and riding the Black Hills.  It should be a good day...see you then.

DID I REALLY SAY THAT?

"How long is the 4 mile climb?"

"How did you like the SW winds out of the SE yesterday?"

"Real men don't wear lycra."
"Did you say that to big Mike?"
"You made your point."

"After this ride's over I hope I never see another Fig Newton...but until then, it's my major energy source."

DID I REALLY DO THAT?

Karen bought these nice water bottles in Boise...she filled them last night and put them in the fridge in her motel room so she'd have some nice cold water when she rode today.  When she got out of the van to ride after the first SAG, her bottles were brimming with nice almost ice cold water.  Problem was, they were still in the fridge in the motel.  I'm sure the maid loved it.

DID I REALLY SEE THAT?

Yesterday while Karen and I were pulling sweep, I found this square hay bale and thought I see if it was as hard as riding round bales.  No problem...the mount went great.

Yep, this was a piece of cake..."Karen, are you getting this?!"

Agggghhh!  I've got to work on that dismount..."Karen, you can stop taking photos any time now!"

Always looking for the latest gadget, Ralph tried out his new modified "Wind Turbo Helmet."  He thought initially it was a good idea, but later he found it only spun around when the wind was in his face.  "It makes nice noises,"  He said.  "And if the wind gets just right, you can hear the ocean."

Realizing they were riding into a new state, Bill and Rich wore their spirit jerseys.  Wrong state guys...didn't you see the bullet holes in the sign yesterday?

Daco...I think you have a problem with your water bottle.

Oh good...Team San Francisco can stay here.

These were the heroes today...exhausted fire fighters.
