DAY 12
Cloverdale to Petaluma

Yesterday          Tomorrow

ROUTE: To Petaluma...the gang wants it to be "Pedaluma."  Works for me. DISTANCE: 69 Miles WINDS: North 5-10
WEATHER: Sunny and warm...87 TERRAIN: Rolling with a couple good climbs...one in the 15% range TOTAL CLIMBING: 2230 Feet

DAILY REPORT:

After all the climbing over the last few days, today was a relatively easy day except for one good knee popping bump about 10 miles from the finish.  We split the breakfast this morning...some went to a local restaurant while a couple others chowed down at the motel.  It was a sunny but cool morning as we departed, but it was  hard to figure what to wear as the morning promised to warm up fast after we got on the road.  We're looking at some toasty temperatures next week.  Today promised to be a "warm up" for what is forecast to come.

Our early miles took us through some primo wine country as we passed by winery after winery.  Rolling hills were the order of the day all speckled with rows of grape harbors and one area had a grove of olive trees.  There were times we were on a narrow, no line road that was so close to the grapes that we could have picked them ourselves.  The road meandered up and down through the grape harbors and made a great backdrop for good photos all morning.  This area seems to be a favorite of the local cyclists as we saw several groups before we made our way through the wine country.

After the first SAG, our route went off into tree lined back roads and through several small interesting towns...Occidental, Freestone, Guerneville, and Valley Ford.  These little spots in the road took us all back to another time before expansion sprawl started taking over most towns.  These towns appeared to be as they were at the turn of the century...slower lifestyle than most of us are probably used to.  Almost everyone stopped at one town or another to sample the local fare...I think one little bakery in Occidental was a definite hit...carrot cake to die for from what was reported.  I was in the van today and luckily I wasn't hungry...I remembered last year I stopped in Valley Ford for a sandwich and a piece of primo blackberry pie.  The lady behind the counter must have felt sorry for me as she cut me a slice that was almost 1/4 of the whole pie.  I'm a thinking I don't need all that...I had already struggled through a sticky bun (see Happenings On The Road).

Everyone commented on how great a day it was...most didn't want to stop when we got to Petaluma.  Hey, it was only another 40 to San Francisco...hmmmm.  But aside from my contemplation, the temperature was fine, plenty of sunshine, beautiful scenery, and an occasional tailwind to help us along...what could be better?  We had just enough climbing to keep the climbing legs exercised, but not nearly as much as we've had in the past 2 or 3 days that was beginning to tell on the quads.  Tomorrow we have a short day into the big city...lots to do and see along the way so it will probably be a long day on the road in spite of the mileage.  See you tomorrow.

HAPPENINGS ON THE ROAD

While the morning found us meandering along countless wineries...

The afternoon found us climbing up dry, golden hills, and through ranchland.

"Yesterday I saw a sign that said San Francisco 90 miles...how come it takes ABB 135 miles to get there."
"Skillful planning."

"Boy, last night I drank a little too much wine."
"When you do that you feel the wrath of grapes."

"That was a nice downhill climb."

"Why do you eat peanut butter everyday?"
"Well, don't you know that, among other things, peanut butter holds your insides together."

"Yesterday was a 'lost proof' day...even for Steve."

"That last hill killed my granny gear...I buried her about half way up."

"When you get to Occidental, don't miss the sticky buns!"
"Isn't that what you get when you put bag balm on your shammy."

YESTERDAY'S QUOTES:

Heard Yesterday at RAP
"My navigation is getting much better, I didn't miss one single turn today."
"There wasn't any turns today."
"I told you I didn't miss any turns."

"I may be old, but I'm slow."

"The cider place is 3 miles."
"Don't you mean 13 miles?"
"Yeah...now you see why they don't let me navigate."

Heard at the SAG
"How far are the bathrooms?"
"About 1/10th of a mile down that road."
"Is there a SAG stop on the way?"

OK, who left their head laying in the road?  I'll bet they're going to miss it this evening.

Steve bought me a sticky bun...

It didn't take long for the results to show...I hope I'm riding tomorrow.

That late afternoon climb was a killer, but the descent was sweeeeeet!

Brian and the metal goat had a photo standoff..."Say cheese!!"  "No...you say cheese!"
