DAY 21

We're skirting Ophelia...for now

ROUTE: Summerville to Waltersboro SC DISTANCE:  48 Miles WINDS: Yawn...another tailwind day
WEATHER: Sunny, warm, high 88 TERRAIN: Still pretty flat... TOTAL CLIMBING: Not much at all

DAY'S OVERVIEW: It's hard to believe there's a storm lurking just off shore waiting for us to ride by.  Looks like we will skirt by but we are still watching that fickle storm.  Looks like we may get some rain tomorrow, but we are going south and should outrun the bad stuff as it starts to pummel the coast where we were a mere couple days ago.  Works for me.

We had a short day today...only 48 miles so we planned a leisurely breakfast and departure.  We rode out of town under beautiful skies and with a kicking tail wind again.  Our route today took us a bit inland along pine tree lined roads with areas of live oak adorned with Spanish Moss that definitely assured us we were in the south.  All in all, it was an easy day and everyone got in early in spite of the late departure.

Since Walterboro is such a happening town and we had some time on our hands this afternoon, I offered a tire changing clinic before rap.  We talk about how to identify a flat and how to deal with it when you get one.  One highlight is when I demonstrate how easy it is to get the rear wheel off...that usually gets ahs and would you do that again.

After rap we all dispersed to the local feederies.  Not many more guilt free 5000 calorie days left so take 'em when we can get 'em...and ice cream is definitely on the menu.  See you tomorrow.

HEARD ON THE ROAD:  "Did you notice there's a church on every road around here?"  "Just one?"

"You didn't cover the most common way to change a tire out here...tap the top of your head when the mechanic comes by."

SOMETHING YOU DON'T SEE EVERYDAY:  Today we passed a "Bee Petting Zoo."  Now I don't know about you, but that's not an attraction that I'm going to rush out and see.

DUH! OF THE DAY:  Not picking on Chris again...but I guess I am.  She was riding with Team Zed today (about 9 riders that ride together near the back everyday) when the team decided to pull over and stop at a convenient store.  At that point, the route sheet said to turn left, but the store was to the right.  Chris was riding about 6 bike lengths behind her husband when he said, "Turning right and stopping at store!"  After they refreshed themselves with a cool beverage, they noticed Chris was missing.  "Anyone seen Chris?"  Karen was sitting at the corner in the van with they pulled up and saw Chris turn right...but didn't notice where she went after that so she hopped in the van to go see if she could find her.  Before she could pull out, here came Chris back after wondering where everyone had gone in front of her.  Hmmm, is this like the guy who pulled out of the restaurant and didn't notice his wife wasn't in the car until about 50 miles down the road?  Same, same...only the bicycle version.  :-)

PHOTOS OF THE DAY

Tom and Margaret came in so fast they couldn't stop...the repair bill on the column at the motel was just under the worth of the tandem...which didn't get a scratch.

Team "Zed" stops to let Gary record a farming phenomenon...hay!  I was surprised to see them stopped.  There wasn't a DQ in sight!

The gals from Team Zed have the right idea and show it on their shirts...Life's too short, eat desert first!
